I have pretty bad anxiety, and it is always hard for me to start new medications because I’m scared I’ll have a bad reaction. Well, I began taking Buspirone a year and a half ago for anxiety, which made it ironic that I had anxiety about starting it.
My doctor started me on 7.5mg 2x/day. She encouraged me to take the first dose at night to help with my apprehension; I have some allergies, but none are severe, so my fear is somewhat unfounded.
I noticed a difference within a few days. I was calmer and my thoughts were less in number (anxiety often shows up as a LOT of thoughts at once for me).
Buspar is meant to be taken every time with food or every time without food; essentially, it needs to be metabolized the same way each time. I found that if I take it near food, I get the spins, so I take it away from food.
I went back to see my doctor after 4 weeks; at that appointment, she upped my dose to 10mg 2x/day because I was interested to see if it would help me more. And it did! I stopped feeling bored and restless at work which was incredible!
Then, about three months later, I decided to go up again, so my doctor gave me 15mg 2x/day. I am happy with this dose. I am able to do things that I want to do that used to make me very anxious, like walking across a rope bridge with my kids. lol
The biggest thing I’ve noticed with Buspar is that I no longer worry about things that I shouldn’t, and I still DO feel concern and take action about things that I should. I wondered, before starting, if it would make me numb or uncaring but it hasn’t. I’m very happy on it. π
